Open standards adoption globally
It is challenging to assess standard adoption across the industry by looking solely at which standards are used to inform API development. In Europe, the Berlin Group API standard is predominantly used by banks when designing their APIs. However, data on the level of use of open banking APIs is limited. So while APIs are being designed with this standard, the usage of APIs drawing on this standard are less clear.
When looking at data available on API usage based on API standards, the FDX standard self-reports annually the number of “consumer accounts” that use services that draw on FDX API standards. The UK calculates “open banking users” who have made an account or payment call in the past month and Brazil counts all those with “active consents” agreed with third party providers.

Authentication protocols and security technologies need to be baked into API design
